[quote]Coco’s letter responding to the change of schedule

January 12, 2010

I’d like to quote the whole letter to express my support to Conan O’Brien.

People of Earth:

In the last few days, I’ve been getting a lot of sympathy calls, and I want to start by making it clear that no one should waste a second feeling sorry for me. For 17 years, I’ve been getting paid to do what I love most and, in a world with real problems, I’ve been absurdly lucky. That said, I’ve been suddenly put in a very public predicament and my bosses are demanding an immediate decision.

Six years ago, I signed a contract with NBC to take over The Tonight Show in June of 2009. Like a lot of us, I grew up watching Johnny Carson every night and the chance to one day sit in that chair has meant everything to me. I worked long and hard to get that opportunity, passed up far more lucrative offers, and since 2004 I have spent literally hundreds of hours thinking of ways to extend the franchise long into the future. It was my mistaken belief that, like my predecessor, I would have the benefit of some time and, just as important, some degree of ratings support from the prime-time schedule. Building a lasting audience at 11:30 is impossible without both.

But sadly, we were never given that chance. After only seven months, with my Tonight Show in its infancy, NBC has decided to react to their terrible difficulties in prime-time by making a change in their long-established late night schedule.

Last Thursday, NBC executives told me they intended to move the Tonight Show to 12:05 to accommodate the Jay Leno Show at 11:35. For 60 years the Tonight Show has aired immediately following the late local news. I sincerely believe that delaying the Tonight Show into the next day to accommodate another comedy program will seriously damage what I consider to be the greatest franchise in the history of broadcasting. The Tonight Show at 12:05 simply isn’t the Tonight Show. Also, if I accept this move I will be knocking the Late Night show, which I inherited from David Letterman and passed on to Jimmy Fallon, out of its long-held time slot. That would hurt the other NBC franchise that I love, and it would be unfair to Jimmy.

So it has come to this: I cannot express in words how much I enjoy hosting this program and what an enormous personal disappointment it is for me to consider losing it. My staff and I have worked unbelievably hard and we are very proud of our contribution to the legacy of The Tonight Show. But I cannot participate in what I honestly believe is its destruction. Some people will make the argument that with DVRs and the Internet a time slot doesn’t matter. But with the Tonight Show, I believe nothing could matter more.

There has been speculation about my going to another network but, to set the record straight, I currently have no other offer and honestly have no idea what happens next. My hope is that NBC and I can resolve this quickly so that my staff, crew, and I can do a show we can be proud of, for a company that values our work.

Have a great day and, for the record, I am truly sorry about my hair; it’s always been that way.

Yours,

Conan

Writing with Latex

December 2, 2009

I’m not gonna write a tutorial on Latex. There’re bunch of them on the internet, so if you need it just google Latex tutorial or just latex and the function u wanna figure out. I begin using Latex after I studied in US and kind of never heard it before in China. I felt so weird that some useful tools, not just the effing alleged anti China thing, will be censored there.

C++ books

November 15, 2009

Copy these suggestion from Daniweb c++ forum for a backup which makes it more convenient to find for myself. And I’m reading the first one recently.

===================================
The following books are recommended; read them in mostly the order listed.

* “Accelerated C++” Andrew Koenig & Barbara Moo
* “The C++ Standard Library” Nicolai Josuttis — a “must have”
* “Effective C++”, “More Effective C++”, “Effective STL” Scott Meyers
* “Exceptional C++”, “More Exceptional C++” Herb Sutter
* “The C++ Programming Language” 3rd edition or later Bjarne Stroustrup
* “Modern C++ Design” Andrei Alexandrescu
* “C++ Templates” Vandevoorde & Josuttis
* “Standard C++ IOStreams and Locales” Langer & Kreft
* “C++ Coding Standards : 101 Rules, Guidelines, and Best Practices” Herb Sutter, Andrei Alexandrescu
I’d like to add a title or two as well, which even though not C++ specific should be required reading for any serious student (or practitioner) of software development.

*
Agile Software Development, Principles, Patterns, and Practices. Robert C. Martin (Affectionately known as Uncle Robert among software engineers)
the same author has another book called “Clean Code
* The C Programming Language. Kernighan and Ritchie. C++ is derived from C after all and a lot of C features can still come in very handy.

* Your compiler documentation

“What’s up” and what you will say in Chinese

November 10, 2009

The part between the stars is a definition of “what’s up” copied from urban dictionary. I agree it a lot cause it really annoyed me when I just came to US. Some one throw this question to me and I just didn’t get it, I didn’t know what should I reply to it. So far as I know, “what’s up” is the short for “what’s the update”. “Nothing new” is definitely a good answer or just “what’s up” back. In China, people also has some same shit as “what’s up”, “最近怎么样”, like “how’s going recently”. It’s always hard to answer cause nothing’s new and I hate to hear such thing but when I meet some people and that’s the first sentence come out. “一样”(“Same”) is a funny answer that I like, kind of a Chinese word joking.

PS: SSDD short for Same Shit Different Day.
**********************************************
what’s up 661 up, 107 down love it hate it

An extremely annoying question that has (unfortunately) replaced “Hello” or “Hi” as the most popular form of casual greeting. For full effect, best delivered while walking past someone at about 90 m.p.h. so the person you’re talking to has no time to respond, and in a tone that suggests you really don’t give a shit about “what’s up” with them.
Dude #1: “Hey, man. What’s up?”
Dude #2: “Uh…” (what he managed to get out before Dude #1 was already too far away to hear the rest of what he was going to say)

Mr Clutch –Derek Fisher

October 27, 2009

You may say it’s kind of late to post this now. It’s true. The new NBA regular season will begin tonight and Lakers will defeat the team from the same city, Clippers.
I am still blood rushing excited when I watched the video again, again and again. I still remember I was having a lab in school and I watched the game on line. And I stopped watching a few minutes before the end, yeah I miss that time, but the reason why is during the time I was watching Magic caught up with Lakers. So I made a self sacrifice for the winning of this game. Aha~ When I thought the game is over and it would be 2-2, then a shout from the other side of the lab get into my ear. It was amazing!

Hope Lakers can get another Championship this season. Good luck for all the player of Lakers.
